  21.     · What is USGNet?
  22.  
  23.      USGNet is a network aimed at development of standards, specifications
  24.     and software.  This means that USGNet will provide a good base for
  25.     software developers, development of new standards and other
  26.     development-related issues.  USGNet is a net dedicated to computers, and
  27.     the people who work with them.  This means that the net will not carry
  28.     any off-topic echos, concerning for example politics or religion.

  31.     · What type of network is USGNet?
  32.  
  33.      USGNet makes use of the Fido(tm) technology, therefore it is a 'FTN'
  34.     (Fido Technology Network).  To join USGNet, your software has to support
  35.     at least the technical matters described in the current revisions of the
  36.     'FTS' (FidoNet Technical Standard) documents as supplied by the 'FSC'
  37.     (FidoNet Standards Commitee).  Your software should also be able to
  38.     distribute files using a TICK-compatible fileprocessor.

  41.     · Why USGNet?
  42.  
  43.      Why was USGNet started?  Well, it began with the birth of the file
  44.     description standard invented by the Users Standards Group.  At first,
  45.     USG discussed the development of the standard through netmail, but this
  46.     didn't allow members to discuss every small idea between themselves,
  47.     which made the development slow and cumbersome.  This led to the
  48.     proposal of starting our own echomail area, and FidoNet was suggested as
  49.     the net to use.  However, after several attempts at setting up a FidoNet
  50.     area, the suggestion of setting up our own net surfaced.  While still
  51.     attempting a FidoNet solution, Micke Persson began research on WHY a
  52.     USGNet would be a better solution.  The members of USG then voted on a
  53.     FidoNet echo or our own net, USGNet, and the voters chose USGNet for
  54.     reasons I will explain below.

  57.     · Why start another net?
  58.  
  59.      Why didn't we go for an existing net, like FidoNet for our echo?  Well,
  60.     since most of the members knew FidoNet to be rather slow and cumbersome,
  61.     we agreed not to use FidoNet.  We wanted the echomail to be fast, not
  62.     taking over a week to reach the majority of the readers.  For
  63.     developers, this means that delaytimes will be as small as possible.

  66.     · Why not use an existing net?
  67.  
  68.      Then why not use other existing nets?  Most other nets are somewhat
  69.     limited, AmigaNet for example, is mainly for Amiga users.  Of course,
  70.     there are nets that could have been used, but they are somewhat
  71.     anonymous and tend to be as slow (or slower) than FidoNet.  This wasn't
  72.     what we were looking for either.

  75.     · What are the main goals for USGNet?
  76.  
  77.      USGNet will be a net fully dedicated to COMPUTERS.  USGNet will also be
  78.     directed towards development of programs and specifications, as well as
  79.     discussions regarding computers, hardware and software.  USGNet should
  80.     also be the perfect "playground" for betatesting software, with quick
  81.     responses from betatesters.  USGNet will probably also aim a little
  82.     higher regarding computer-knowledge.  Quality, not quantity.

  85.     · Who will benefit from USGNet?
  86.  
  87.      For example, developers will benefit by having a betatesting echo where
  88.     the responses are significantly faster than what other nets provide.
  89.     Also, developers are given the opportunity to coordinate with other
  90.     developers, as well as share experiences, tips and hints.

  93.     · How do I become a part of UGSNet?
  94.  
  95.      To become a node in USGNet, fill out the form appended at the end of
  96.     this document, and send it to your nearest USGNet administrator.
  97.     Ability to receive crashmail during 24hours per day is a small basic
  98.     concept your system has to support to get a node number.  If you can't
  99.     fulfil this criteria, the only way to join USGNet is to become a point
  100.     under an existing node.

  117.     (such as rules and specifications) from any node in the nodelist.
